To determine opening forces regarding their user-friendliness, it is necessary to evaluate the capabilities of the consumer objectively. These depend on age, gender and personal constitution. Regardless of the capability, there are mainly packaging design aspects, that influence forces on a tear tab.

Within the research projekt (Easy Opening - Standardized testing method/Standard values) consumers of different age and gender groups were tested to determine their opening forces. Only for this purpose, the (PPF-Tester) has been developed.

Further influence factors on opening forces were determined:

• size/shape of the tear tab,
• properties of the tab material and
• grip type

The influence on the achievable force values was significant.
